Sally Abé

from £65.00

Artwork no 5

When Sally saw Phil Howard was opening Elystan Street after selling his two-starred restaurant, The Square, she knew she wanted to be part of it. Drawn to Phil’s love for big, gutsy flavors and his relaxed approach to recipes, she joined the opening team and enjoyed making old-school dishes like tureens and apple jellies. However, when the opportunity at The Harwood Arms came up, she couldn’t resist.

The Harwood Arms, London’s only Michelin-starred gastropub co-owned by Brett Graham, was already familiar to Sally. She and her husband were regulars and loved its unique vibe. Sally always preferred the balance The Harwood struck between casual and fine dining.

Taking over as head chef, Sally faced the challenge of earning the team's trust. She shared her vision openly, and together they moved forward. It took about 18 months for Sally to truly put her stamp on The Harwood Arms, transitioning from executing others' dishes to serving her own creations.

In 2021, Sally moved on to lead a new venture at The Conrad London St. James hotel, overseeing four establishments, including The Pem. Named after suffragette Emily Wilding Davison, The Pem features a female-led team dedicated to creating a supportive kitchen culture, far removed from the intense environments of the past.

A published author, her first book ‘ A woman’s place is the kitchen : dispatches from behind the pass ‘ is an essential book for any female chef who has either weathered and conquered the storm or is on the precipice of entering the hospitality industry.

Drawn with CaranD’ache pencils, faber and castell inks and molotow acrylics
