Roberta Hall - McCarron
Artwork no9
From the moment Roberta Hall-McCarron stepped into a professional kitchen at sixteen, she knew she wanted to be a chef. That first week of work experience at Edinburgh’s The Tower Restaurant set her on a path she's never strayed from. She loved the fast-paced nature of the kitchen and how simple ingredients could become extraordinary dishes.
Roberta started working full-time at The Tower after school, then moved to Glasgow for culinary college, balancing her studies with part-time work at Number 16. She later spent a year at Slaley Hall in Northumbria before returning to Edinburgh to work at the Balmoral Hotel.
An opportunity in Dubai took Roberta to the luxury kitchens of the Burj al Arab, but she soon returned to Edinburgh to join Tom Kitchin’s Michelin-starred restaurant, The Kitchin. After three years there, Roberta helped open Castle Terrace with Kitchin and Dominic Jack, becoming head chef and meeting her future husband, Shaun McCarron.
The couple then ran a rural pub in Cambridgeshire for a year before returning to Edinburgh to open their own restaurant, The Little Chartroom, in 2018. The intimate bistro showcased Scottish produce and quickly gained a loyal following. Roberta’s fame grew after reaching the finals of BBC’s Great British Menu and winning the fish course in 2021.
With The Little Chartroom’s success, Roberta and Shaun moved to a larger site and opened a more casual restaurant, Eleanore, in the original space. Roberta is proud to be recognized for her quality cooking and as a role model for women in the culinary industry, proving it's possible to run a kitchen and have a family.
