Le Gavroche - originally painted by Pouc of Montmartre

from £110.00

The big eyed ragamuffin painting - presented on the opening night of Le Gavroche The quintessential Parisian Gavroche… Victor Hugo would have been proud.

Le Gavroche 1967 - 2024

Game Changers.

The wave whose ripples are still felt today.

Opened in April 1967 by two brothers - Michel and Albert Roux.

They changed the culinary landscape and brought the UK kicking and screaming onto the world’s culinary stage.

A Petri dish of culinary talent, being single handedly responsible for bringing out the talent of Pierre Koffman, Marco Pierre White, Marcus Wareing, Gordon Ramsay and countless other potential industry pioneers.

When people talk about “ standing on the shoulders of giants “ ; these are the giants they talk about.

The first restaurant to ever achieve 3 Michelin stars in the UK and only joined in the 3 star club when the company dissolved and split with Michel Roux opening the waterside Inn in Bray and Albert Roux remaining to run Le Gavroche in London.. The waterside Inn became the second ever restaurant to win 3 stars.

A story of legacy and the restaurants were eventually handed down to Albert’s son Michel Roux Jdr and Michel’s son Alain roux.

Michel Roux passed in March 2020 and Albert Roux passed in January 2021.

Their legacy will never be forgotten and every chef owes a debt to that kitchen; opened in 1967 to a culinary barren Britain.

Having ran Le Gavroche since 1991, Michel Roux Jnr announced its closure, slated for its last service in January of 2024.

This is legacy, this is the definition of an icon, pioneers in the face of systemic ignorance, they changed everything and they will never be forgotten.

This series of artworks are a love letter 💌, an appreciation to an enormous debt that will never be repaid in full.

They are drawn with CaranD’ache pencils, faber and Castell fine-liners and ink washes. There is a tiny amount of acrylic used and they are originally all drawn on watercolour paper.
